Well, it has been over a year since I have posted so I guess it is about time. Blame it on my Facebook addiction. Ha.

Seriously, it has been a busy year with Mom and Dad. As most of you know, Mom is in the nursing home with Alzheimer's Disease and Dad just died in December. When I am dealing with serious stuff, especially grief, I tend to withdraw from everything and concentrate on whatever is at hand. I do not easily share my deepest emotions. True to myself, I have done this the past year and a half. Dad's death was sort of unexpected but Mom's illness has been and will continue to be the "long goodbye".

On a positive note, I have the best brothers in the world! Hardly a day goes by that one or both of them does not call me and check on me and Mom. It seems to me that as we age we kind of come around full circle. We grew up together, played together, shared life together. Then we got busy with our adult lives and families. Now our children are grown and we are once again spending time together and sharing life together. Some members of the circle are missing, which brings me great sorrow, but there is also much joy in getting together more often with my brothers and their wives.

Such is life.

A Letter From Jesus About Christmas

It has come to my attention that many of you are upset that folks are taking my name out of the season. How I personally feel about this celebration can probably be most easily understood by those of you who have been blessed with children of your own. I don't care what you call the day. If you want to celebrate My birth, just GET ALONG AND LOVE ONE ANOTHER!

Now, having said that, let Me go on. If it bothers you that the town in which you live doesn't allow a scene depicting my birth, then just get rid of a couple of Santa’s and snowmen and put in a small Nativity scene on your own front lawn. If all My followers did that there wouldn't be any need for such a scene on the town square because there would be many of them all around town.

Stop worrying about the fact that people are calling the tree a holiday tree, instead of a Christmas tree. It was I who made all trees. You can remember Me anytime you see any tree. Decorate a grape vine if you wish: I actually spoke of that one in a teaching, explaining who I am in relation to you and what each of our tasks was. If you have forgotten that one, look up John 15: 1-8.

If you want to give Me a present in remembrance of My birth here is my wish list. Choose something from it:

1. Instead of writing protest letters objecting to the way my birthday is being celebrated, write letters of love and hope to soldiers away from home. They are terribly afraid and lonely this time of year. I know, they tell me all the time.

2. Visit someone in a nursing home. You don't have to know them personally. They just need to know that someone cares about them.

3. Instead of writing the President complaining about the wording on the cards his staff sent out this year, why don't you write and tell him that you'll be praying for him and his family this year. Then follow up... It will be nice hearing from you again.

4. Instead of giving your children a lot of gifts you can't afford and they don't need, spend time with them. Tell them the story of my birth, and why I came to live with you down here. Hold them in your arms and remind them that I love them.

5 Pick someone that has hurt you in the past and forgive him or her.

6. Did you know that someone in your town will attempt to take their own life this season because they feel so alone and hopeless? Since you don't know who that person is, try giving everyone you meet a warm smile; it could make the difference.

7. Instead of nit picking about what the retailer in your town calls the holiday, be patient with the people who work there. Give them a warm smile and a kind word. Even if they aren't allowed to wish you a "Merry Christmas" that doesn't keep you from wishing them one. Then stop shopping there on Sunday. If the store didn't make so much money on that day they'd close and let their employees spend the day at home with their families

8. If you really want to make a difference, support a missionary-- especially one who takes my love and Good News to those who have never heard my name.

9. Here's a good one. There are individuals and whole families in your town who not only will have no "Christmas" tree, but neither will they have any presents to give or receive. If you don't know them, buy some food and a few gifts and give them to the Salvation Army or some other charity which believes in me and they will make the delivery for you.

10. Finally, if you want to make a statement about your belief in and loyalty to me, then behave like a Christian. Don't do things in secret that you wouldn't do in my presence. Let people know by your actions that you are one of mine.

Don't forget: I am God and can take care of Myself.. Just love Me and do what I have told you to do. I'll take care of all the rest. Check out the list above and get to work; time is short. I'll help you, but the ball is now in your court. And do have a most blessed Christmas with all those whom you love and remember:

Caring for Mom

To borrow from my friend A.J., I have been a bad blogger lately. Just day to day life is keeping me so busy that I do not have time like I once had. And it seems so much easier to just post a sentence on Facebook and be done. That is the lazy way, anyway.

I also tend to draw into myself when I am upset or grieving about something. My life right now involves grief as I watch my Mom progress in her Alzheimer's disease. Caring for her is a full time job. My biggest adjustment so far is not having any alone time or spontaneous time to go see friends and family or just grocery shop. For 12 years now I have basically been alone and had gotten quite content with it. Now Mom gets up before I do or as soon as she hears me get up. Then at night she will not settle until all the lights are out and she thinks I am asleep. Caring for her consumes almost all of the time that I am not at work.

I have hesitated to blog about life with an Alzheimer patient for fear I will appear to be whining or complaining. As tiring as it is, it is still a great joy for me to care for my Mom and to know that I am doing everything I possibly can to make her last years as happy as they can be under the circumstances. Hopefully my blogging about this will help and encourage someone else. There have been times in my life when it helped me to know that I was not crazy, others have felt the same things.

There are times of frustration but also times of humor. Mom is getting hard of hearing or maybe just can not understand what I am talking about. I, on the other hand, have only one vocal cord and sometimes I am raspy. It makes for some laughs to hear what she thinks I said. And then there are the days that I feel like the movie Groundhog...Mom asks the same questions and I give the same answers. Sometimes I try to come up with a different way to say the same thing. Quite a challenge!

Hey everybody! I am having a booth wide 25% off at Grannie's Attic. Ready to move out the old and get ready to refurnish with some different stuff. I'm getting tired of seeing the same old things in there. So if you have been eyeballing anything and wishing, now is the time to come on in and buy. Most cassettes will be 75 cents. An antique table and chairs will be $150.00. Just the chairs are worth more than that!

There are persimmon wood golf clubs, lots of knick knacks, pictures, iron crosses, wire baskets, etc. The wire baskets are new, not used, and would make really cute Christmas presents. So that is my sales pitch. Let's see if it works!

The Market Place

Here are some pictures from the new flea market which has opened in Monticello. It is located beside Queen City Furniture at the intersection of Hwy 425 and Hwy 278. There are still booths open for rent so if you have ever thought of getting into this business, now is the time.

I am excited about the direction our town is taking with all the flea market type businesses and resale shops. I will try and name the ones I can think of and if I miss one, I do apologize. There is Grannie's Attic, The Market Place, Discount Furniture houses one, Pam's store on the square (can't remember the name right now), Kay's Nest, Thrifty Chic, and Twice As Nice. And there is also the one in the old bus depot on Gaines. I hope all these shops will draw business for us from all around. More sales mean more sales tax for our city!

Changes

Things in life sometimes change more quickly than we would like. Mom moved in with me on August 31st. So far we are making it fine together. We have help during the day while I am at work and then we spend time together at night. I am so thankful for the opportunity to spend this last bit of time with her before she progresses to the later stages of her Alzheimer's. She has been a good mother and I hope I can repay her just a bit in the next few weeks or months.

Moving Past the Land of the Midnight Sun

One of my four blog readers asked me this week when I was going to get out of the land of the midnight sun. And in the last week I have also been accosted by three others who said they missed my updates on here. Why, I don't know, cause I live a very ordinary life, even boring life. So, I will try to catch you up without boring you with the details.

During my trip to Alaska to see my new grandson, he took a cold and spent nine days in the hospital in Anchorage. It shook me to my very core to think that we might lose him. But thank goodness God saw fit to bring him thru and we now have a healthy, strapping boy. I was so glad that I was out there to take care of the girls so Kristy and Mike could both be with Keith.

Then, I got home to my Mom who has Alzheimer's. Around the first of July she seemed to take a plunge. We tried a nursing home but she did not adjust well, so we now have her at home with daytime help. Helping with her care and dealing with my emotions about this situation has taken up a good deal of my time. I keep reminding myself of the quote on an email I get regularly: "Life is not the way its supposed to be...its the way it is... the way we cope with it is what makes the difference." I am trying my darnedest to cope!

Add to this mixture the fact that my best friend is dealing with the illness of both her parents; Andy was in a wreck and has a messed up shoulder; and I have made several trips to the doctor with various stuff such as colds, blood pressure and now a boil on my back (no picture to post LOL).

There, now, you are all caught up. Aren't you sorry you asked? Please be assured this is no pity party because my life is truly blessed on the other hand. My Alaska family is very happy. Abby has started first grade and Lilly starts pre-school this week. Keith is growing and thriving. I am starting to try and figure out when I can go see them again.

Andy and Donna are also very happy together. They have all joined my church. Lane' was saved at summer camp this summer and baptized a couple of weeks ago. Donna is in college and working full time too. I'll be glad when she is thru and things slow down so that I can see them more. Circumstances have kept me from seeing them as much as I would like to lately.

Now I have to go to a birthday party for my adopted granddaughter, Jordan. She is now 11 years old! I remember holding her close and rocking her when she was a baby. She still gives me big hugs and smiles every time I see her.

I will try and post some pictures on here later.

He could not be named for two better men in my opinion. What a wonderful heritage he will have. Mike has already proved himself to be the best dad to Abby and Lilly and now he has another little one to love. I am so blessed to have him in my life also. Kristy had a wonderful dad to raise her and I am sure that he is looking down in love on Kristy and her family. I am so touched that Kristy and Mike named the baby for Keith. What a precious little bundle of joy for all of us.

Book, Books and More Books

Okay, so I have been very lazy about posting anything here lately. But life has been very busy. As you can see in my previous posts, there was a wedding at my house. And since I have never claimed to keep a spotless house, the race was on to get everything all spic and span. Which it was if you did not look too close.

In the midst of all this, I bought tons of used books to put in my booth at the famous Grannie's Attic. So if you love to read like I do, go on by and check out my booth just inside the back room. There are lots more in boxes in my spare bedroom that have to wait on shelf space.

Below are some pictures of the booths I have in the front room. Picture yourself stretched out on this chaise lounge with a bag of chocolates and one of those books I just sold you. What a life!

Or, if you prefer the outdoors, here are some chairs for your porch. Swap a glass of lemonade for the chocolates and take that book outdoors!

Wedding Day

What a wonderful day it has been. Nothing does a mother's heart more good than to see her children happy. Today was truly a happy day for my son and also for me. I gained a daughter who is also my friend whom I love very much and two wonderful grandchildren. And as Maury commented in the earlier post, yes it was very special to me to have it at my house. God smiled on us with a beautiful sunshiny day.

Tonight has been loaded with fun as I spent time with Lane', B.J. and cousin Madison. It is such fun to kiss little smiling faces and tuck them snugly into bed.

After my visits with Kristy and family in Alaska, I had a much better understanding of why they all love Alaska so much. I fell in love with the beauty and majesty of the place too. But let me tell you, after the weather at Christmas kept me from flying in and now the volcano is keeping the Nobles' captive, I am experiencing a real love/hate relationship with the place. As any parent knows, it is not a pleasant feeling knowing that you cannot get to your children quickly.....even if they are grown and quite capable of tending to themselves. In my case, it may even be that they might be unable to get here to tend to my old, drooling self. At any rate, I am ready for Mt. Redoubt to settle down and get back to her beautiful self. After all, I have to get out there again for the birth of my grandchild in May!

About Moving to Alaska

NO! When I retire I may go up and spend months at a time but I have no plans to actually move up there although I love Alaska and enjoy visiting there (it is not really Alaska that I love but all my family there). I have a son and his family here and also my parents and siblings. When I was growing up we moved frequently . . . so frequently that I never had what I considered to be a hometown. I have now lived in Monticello for 39 years and it is home. My Keith is buried here, my friends are here, I am quite content here. So the answer is no, although I still hold out hope every day that they will move back here or at least somewhere in driving distance.

After the Wind

After snowing somewhere over eight inches, on Saturday and Sunday the wind began to blow. Now I am not talking about a soothing little breeze but a pre-tornado wind in Arkansas would compare. It blew snow that took my breath and stung my bare face.

Driving down the road looked a lot like a good fog had settled in. Excuse the picture quality but most were taken thru the car windows because when we ventured from the car we were bundled up and hunkered down against the wind. I have never wanted to walk fast on a snow covered parking lot so badly but it was slicked over from the wind.

The beautiful snow in the spruce trees was gone. The ice laden branches which glistened in the sun were gone. Maybe if I had stood outside a bit some of my short, fluffy self would have blown away. But it was much too cold to think of weight loss.

While driving down the road, I yelled, "Stop, back up!" I just had to get some pictures of what I had seen. The road signs warned of an aircraft crossing and looking to my right and my left, I saw a snow covered airstrip clearing. Absolutely amazing! Right in the middle of a neighborhood on a lake!

Tonight I started packing up the Christmas decorations and took down the tree. Once again I am so late taking down that I feel like I celebrated the twelve weeks of Christmas. I seriously considered leaving it all out and make it the twelve months of Christmas.

Snow Machine Riding

The Friday after Christmas, Dave and Laura invited us all out to their house on the lake to go snow machining. Now I suppose this is comparable to riding four wheelers in south Arkansas ...... in a very loose way. I was somewhat nervous about flying over the snow at 30 to 40 miles per hour in weather well below the freezing mark. So I started pulling clothes out of my suitcase to "layer up". The resulting fashion attire can be viewed a little further below.

This is the lake behind Dave and Laura's house. I assumed we would take very short turns riding on the lake, cut a few do-nuts and then go back inside by the nice warm fire and hibernate for a while. But Dave had other plans.

I got all layered up, five layers on top and three on bottom. Like I said my suitcase was cleaned out for this outing. In addition to my own clothes, I borrowed Kristy's nice thick mittens and wool socks, Dave's Carhart overalls and Mike's lace up boots. Needless to stay I walked very stiffly because there were almost too many layers to allow me to bend my knees. Not to mention boots that were a bit too long for my feet.

That is Dave standing behind the snow machine, Carhartless. What a compassionate, giving soul! I don't know about him but the only part of me that got cold on the ride was the exposed part of my face. And for about half of the ride my face was plastered to his back.

We're off onto the lake. I may not can walk on water but I can now say I have snow machined on water! What an awesome thing for me to experience getting to see a lake completely frozen over. I have successfully avoided such extreme cold until now. But I must say that it is an experience I will never forget.

Mike started out in the lead but when we got onto the lake, Dave overtook him and led the way down the lake until we came to a path into the woods. The adventure began in earnest. The woods were beautiful with the snow draped limbs hanging over the path. One thing I noticed was that unlike riding four wheelers thru the woods, there were no spider webs in my face. I was so thankful not to have to worry about where the spiders were.

We bounced and swerved down the path until we came to a snow bank between us and the road which we needed to get on. Dave yelled hang on and up we went and just as quickly down we came on the same side of the snow bank. Of course, our unintended descent kicked up a little bitty avalanche of snow which landed smack dab in my face and down my collar. What a shock! At least we were still seated on the snow machine. God is good!

Then to my dismay, Dave said "You will have to walk thru the snow bank and I will try to drive the machine over." I was thinking, "Yeah right" but also did not want to go airborn on that thing. So Mike gallantly walked me out a path thru the bank .... or so he thought. When I attempted to go thru it, each step I took only packed the snow down where I was standing. After what seemed like three hours, but I know was only a few minutes, Mike and Dave managed to push and pull me to the other side. I am glad no one had a camera! Remember all those warm clothes? Try walking thru a snow bank when you can barely pick up your feet! And I never knew you could break a sweat in sub zero weather.

Dave then took off over the snow bank. The snow machine made it over. Dave did not. He landed in the snow, jumped up and whooped, we loaded up and finished the ride with no further mishaps. What an awesome adventure for me!

My First Winter Day in Wasilla

My first day in Alaska was the shortest day of the year. I am sooooo not a morning person and have seen very few sunrises in my life but for the nine days I was there I saw the sun rise every day. At around 10:00 in the morning. And it was dark by about 4:00 in the afternoon. By 7:00 I was sleepy and ready for bed (which was 10:00 here in Monticello). I wanted to hibernate all day long. My internal clock is still messed up!

I found out last night that I confused and disappointed some people by my earlier post which mentioned having a white Christmas. That post was intended to tell those who know me that I was Alaska bound for Christmas and was certain of a white Christmas. My apologies for those of you in Monticello who thought that was our weather forecast.

Let me just say that I saw more snow than I have ever seen in my life. What I have seen in Arkansas all added up for my entire life may not add up to what was on the ground. Below are a few pictures so see for yourselves.

1. My daughter and her family live in Alaska. I love visiting them there but my biggest wish ever is for them to move home or closer to home.

2. My son is engaged to a wonderful woman who has become not only my future daughter-in-law but also my friend. Her two children are delightful and I love them bunches.

3. I have two Chihuahuas, Fancy and Bruiser. I did not pick out either name but they fit.

4. The house I live in is cypress and pine all of which was cut by my husband before he died. I love living in it.

5. I work at a job I love at the police department but I am also looking forward to getting to retire. Hopefully that will happen in less than four years if all goes as planned.

6. I am a far from perfect Christian but I have loved the Lord all my life.

7. I think there are way too many I's in this list!

Looking Like Christmas

Well, my tree is up! Thanks to Lane' and B.J. They came out this afternoon and helped me get the tree done and the house all decorated. It's begining to look a lot like Christmas. Can you read that line without singing it? It even feels like Christmas outside.

My church is all prettied up too. Wish we could leave the garland and poinsettias up all year. Maybe it is because red is my favorite color that I enjoy the red splashed everywhere this time of year.

I put in my favorite Christmas CD this afternoon and sat back with Donna and B.J. (Lane' left for a party). We sipped hot chocolate with lots of marshmallows and listened to Kenny belt it out. It has been a perfectly delightful day.

Atrocious Acts of Christmas

This is the ultimate reason to add to my list of why I don't shop on black Friday. What a sad commentary on the moral values of our society when shopping for what we WANT is worth more than a human life. No wonder our economy is failing. Maybe it should so that we can realize what is really important in life. Has there ever been a more selfish, self-centered society than we have now?

Thanksgiving Day

What a wonderful day it has been! Andy, Donna and B.J. were here for a huge lunch of grilled pork chops, crock pot venison, mashed potatoes, biscuit sauce (if you call it gravy, B.J. won't eat it), corn, green beans, carrots, rolls, pecan pie and a rum cake baked by my good friend, Gail. The leftovers were just as good for supper although they may get old to me before they are all gone. We made some pictures outside after lunch then went for a drive. It has been a pleasure to me to have family here the whole day. I hate to admit it but sometimes I have a bit of a letdown when everyone leaves in mid afternoon. The only letdown today was missing the ones not here: Lane' and the Alaska crew. I look forward to the day when both of my children and their families can be here all at the same time.

I have so much to be thankful for this year:

A growing realization and appreciation of just how much God loves me.

Well, my first plan was very successful - to sleep late. I also plan to take some stuff to Grannie's Attic in a while and then work on pricing things I have been bringing in for about two weeks. Got to get all these boxes put up before Thanksgiving. Now don't go looking for the exercise equipment in the picture to show up at Grannie's. It must stay here since it is so good for hanging clothes on and setting boxes on. Using it today is NOT in my plans.

Gypsy Needs a Home

Is there anyone out there who needs a sweet companion? Gypsy needs a good, loving home to move into. She would be happiest indoors with a family or individual who would pet her and love on her a lot. She has been spayed and I would get her up to date on her shots, get her bathed and dipped, and send her to you all cleaned up. She has a very sweet personality and needs to move to a new home before cold weather gets here. Think about it!

Okay, so I've been a lazy blogger for a while but when your life is basically boring then your blog spot is basically boring too.

I have been busy at Grannie's Attic working on my booths. Things have been rearranged and I have added lots of new stuff which I have picked up here and there. Almost all the booths have been rented and Grannie has even expanded into the back room with some wonderful pieces of antique furniture and Christmas things. Drop in and look around. There is something for almost anyone in there including baby things (new and used), wedding stuff (new), antiques, tee shirts, books, magazines, furniture, candles, Tupperware, purses, luggage, etc. It is like a mini mall!

The pictures below are from last week at my son's house. It sure is nice to get a call saying, "Mom we're grilling tonight so come on out and eat supper with us." It was an enjoyable night and I got lots of hugs and kisses from Lane' and B.J. Lane' posed with her new puppy and B.J. just generally showed off his jumping and doing boy stuff for me. Lots of fun was had by all and this night was far from boring!

Fancy and Bruiser

I finally got a decent picture of my new house dog, Bruiser. He is a rescue, who came to a friend's house, and then she found him a home with Fancy and I. It had been on my mind to get a companion dog for Fancy since I am gone to work every day and I was just sure she was lonesome all day. So when Bruiser showed up, out to the woods he came to see if Fancy liked him. She didn't! At least not for a few weeks but now they get along famously. She still is a tiny bit jealous when I give him my attention but they get along fine. Both of them are good company for me and I really do enjoy them. Below is one of the rare times I am able to get them still at the same time long enough to get a picture. Aren't they cute?

A friend of mine has found a home for Rascal, the Jack Russell Terrier. Gypsy, the black dog still needs a home and there is also a dog that looks like he may be a Blue Healer. Both of them would make great pets. If any of you know someone who would like a dog please let me know.

Homes Needed

As you know if you follow my blog, I rescue dogs quite frequently. These are two of my rescues who went to live with my neighbor shortly after I got them. My neighbor was an elderly man who lived alone. Last week he passed away. Since I now have two other dogs, I really need to find homes for Gypsy and Rascal.

Gypsy is the black dog. She has been spayed. She would make a wonderful pet for a family with children. She is gentle and loving with a sweet personality.

Rascal is a different story. He needs a place where he can run and play during the day but come inside at night. He might be okay with older children but he has been known to nip. He hates a bath and will need a strong hand for that. He also has a good temperment over all but being a Jack Russell Terrier has to have plenty of exercise and outdoor time. He can tree squirrels but is not trained to come to his owner when called.

Both of these dogs are free to the right home. I love them both and want them to have good homes. If you need some little sweetheart to love please consider one or both of them.

Before I load this baby bed up and take it to Grannie's Attic, I thought I would put it on here and see if any of you would like to buy it. (It will be less expensive if I don't have to take it apart and move it LOL). It was used very little for my grandchildren who usually wound up sleeping with Mamma when they were here. I bought the bed and mattress new at Wal Mart. I can price it several ways 'cause I have other "baby" stuff that my grands have outgrown. The toys are mostly for infants: chew toys (barely used), car seat attachments, Leap Frog piano, etc. There are also two duckie sheets, a teddy bear sheet, a mattress pad, teddy bear bumper, two towels, several washcloths and bibs. If anyone is interested either call me or email me in the next few days and let me know. I plan to take it all to my booth by the weekend unless you let me know that you want it.

My oldest granddaughter started kindergarten in Alaska today. It seems such a short time since I looked at her the first time and cried a river of joyful tears. My daughter sent pictures but I can't get any of them to load on here. Abby looked so grown up, just like a school girl and one picture had Lilly hugging her with her lip stuck wayyyyy out. It will be a big adjustment for all of them. As for me, I just feel old all of a sudden!

Moving This Weekend

We are fast getting ready for moving into Grannie's Attic's new location. Monday the 28th will be the first day. Everyone is welcome to come by and check us out. We will be beside Save-a-Lot. I am excited because the store is bigger and the parking will be better. I now have three booths and could fill up a couple more. The only thing that I need is more shelving but I can add more later. This week my stuff is 20 percent off, a moving sale.
